Epidemiological study of chronic degenerative diseases in the adult and elderly population of Brazil.

This investigation includes the various aspects involved in the functionality and burden of chronic diseases, such as social, demographic, environmental, and behavioral risk factors, healthy life expectancy, total mortality, and premature death, morbidity (prevalence and incidence), clinical aspects (diagnosis, severity, response to treatment), and burden of disease YLL – years of life lost, YDL – years lived with disability, – disability-adjusted life years (DALY).YLLYLL– years of life lost,– years of life lost, YDLYDL – years lived with disability, – disability adjusted life years (– years lived with disability, – disability adjusted life years ( DALYDaly).

  • Axis: Therapy of chronic non-communicable diseases
  1. Development of clinical and preclinical studies of drugs for the treatment and prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases (such as cardiovascular, metabolic, psychiatric, and ophthalmic diseases).

  1. Characterization of inflammatory and painful changes associated with chronic diseases (diabetes, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and migraine).

  1. To assess the impact of non-pharmacological interventions on pain, functionality, and muscle performance in elderly animals and humans.
  2. The aim is to measure and verify the impact of exercise-induced myokines and other pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators on pain disorders, immunosenescence, and muscle and functional performance in the elderly.
  3. To verify the psychometric measures of the instruments used to assess pain, functionality, and muscle performance in the elderly with osteoarticular, muscular, and neurological diseases.
  4. To study the multidimensional aspects of the assessment, prevention, and treatment of low back pain in the elderly.

  1. Study of chronic kidney disease in all its aspects and stages; treatment modalities: dialysis and transplantation; clinical outcomes after kidney transplantation and risk factors associated with reduced graft and patient survival.
  • Axis: Role of adipocytokines in ovarian steroidogenesis
       1.  The main objective of this project is to investigate the role of various adipocytokines in androgen production. vitro using a human adrenal cell line and bovine theca cells.

  • Axis: In-hospital prognostic factors and mortality in chronic diseases
       1. This line aims, through a cohort study, to investigate in individuals over 60 years of age admitted to HUCM, the main nutritional, sociodemographic, and clinical factors related to in-hospital mortality rates, and mortality and readmission.
